Sourdough pizza is my favourite kind of pizza – the tangy allure of sourdough bread and rustic touch of thick-rimmed pizza base with crispy air-pockets and slightly charred edges. It’s also a favourite of Jien as we both enjoy the chew and flavour the sourdough bread yields, just like the ones at Kenny Hills Bakers.
We’ve been there several times for pizza and their baked goods but our visits are often brief as the place is super packed on weekends, regardless of the time you go. It’s difficult to resist the array of baked goods near the counter – the scent wafts throughout the shop, tempting you to order more than you set out to do.
The staff are friendly despite circumstances; they are often ready to assist where needed. But often, self-service is quicker. Expect to share a table with strangers when the place is packed – that’s what we do when we go and it’s fine with us. We’re there for the food so nothing else really matters. Unless the stranger we share a table with attempts to take a slice of my pizza. Then I’d be outraged.
We’ve been eating two of their pizzas repeatedly and found them good – my favourite is the Sicilian and while Jien prefers Three Cheese (both RM38). The latter comprises mozzarella, blue cheese and gruyere for “pull factor” and also depth in flavour. I personally love the savoury notes of the anchovies on spicy tomato base as it gives the dough character. We really should try the Al Funghi and Beef Pepperoni as both smelt terrific when the waiter brought them past our table.
On a recent weekend, we had the Eggs Flamenco (RM21) from their all-day brunch menu. This comes with two organic eggs, ovenbaked with turkey chorizo, chickpeas and spiced tomato coulis and served alongside toasted organic bread. Decent, but I like my baked eggs saucy so this isn’t quite my thing.
Again, we’re familiar creatures when it comes to dessert for Jien has been consistently helping himself to their Key Lime Pie. To be fair, Kenny Hills Bakers does it well so even a non-fan like myself is hooked. The pastry base is of just the right thickness and I liked how it holds shape even at the prod of my fork.
Then you get that moderately sweet and tangy acidity from the key lime filling, which I feel is suited for my palate. It’s light in texture and flavour, but nothing short of delicious. The strawberry tart is also work checking out if you’re into meringues – this one is chewy with a melt-in-the mouth texture and a crunchy shell.
Overall, I like Kenny Hills Bakers and the mini chaos it brings at the pastry section. It’s cosy and quaint, and most importantly, they use good quality ingredients. You can taste the difference in their food versus other places and I like that about this place.
