Big Mom Beancurd in Ipoh was recommended by a local who claims it’s a better alternative to the popular Funny Mountain Soya Beancurd (our regular place) that is perpetually crowded. We decided to give Big Mom Beancurd a try as the place allows for dine-in, which is more comfortable compared to eating in the car or by the sidewalk.
While the space is significantly larger compared to Funny Mountain, Big Mom Beancurd gets pretty crowded so depending on timing and luck, you’ll still need to wait for a table – like we did. That said, the owners are friendly and service is quick.
Big Mom Beancurd in Ipoh
Big Mom Beancurd offers the standard tau fu fah, and also the ones with topping. You can opt between white, ginger or brown sugar for your tau fu fah (RM1.70 – plain) or add on toppings (RM0.80 per item). Chrysanthemum sugar is available during weekends and I was told it’s the nicest among all the sugar syrups available.

We ordered the red bean, peanut & sesame with grass jelly and peach resin with grass jelly to try. Of the lot, I liked the red bean best but in terms of beancurd texture, Big Mom Beancurd is denser compared to Funny Mountain’s tau fu fah. Texture is quite good but it’s still not as silken smooth as what you’d get at the latter.

Hot Soy Milk
The soy milk (RM2.20) is quite good. I like that it’s aromatic, adequately thick and not overly sweet. Big Mom Beancurd also sells flavoured soy milk such as purple potatoes soy milk, red bean soy milk, peach resin soy milk and black bean with grass jelly soy milk. If you’re looking for flavour variety, try those. That said, I’m quite a traditionalist when it comes to soy milk so plain or black soy are best.
Overall, I find Big Mom Beancurd a good alternative if you’re looking for a decent tau fu fah spot to sit down and enjoy comfortably. Service is quick and prices are reasonable.
